At least eleven people have died on Mount Everest this year, several of them in connection with having to wait too long in queues at high altitude as hundreds of climbers tried to reach the summit. The expert panel also proposes that the price for the permit to climb the mountain is raised from just over 100,000 to the equivalent of up to SEK 350,000. In addition, climbers must be able to present health certificates and employ experienced mountain guides.

This year, the Nepalese authorities issued a record high number of permits for climbing expeditions to Mount Everest, 381. The mountain is also climbed from the other side, where the Tibet authorities are conducting the review.
