They all considered it missing. Until suddenly, from the second row, it is again key to the formation of the new Italian Government. It is the story of the political resurrection of Matteo Renzi, (in a clear parallel to the figure of Pedro Sánchez in Spain), who, without even being the leader of the Democratic Party (PD), acts de facto as such.

Beyond the personalism that characterizes the former Florentine 'premier', Renzi, out of any official scheme, knows that he has a very important weight in his party. Although the secretary general of the PD is Nicola Zingaretti, the current parliamentarians of the formation were chosen through the lists approved by Matteo Renzi for the general elections of 2018. For this reason, the Tuscan is being key in the negotiations to unlock the current crisis of Government in Italy

"Salvini has to resign, " Matteo Renzi told his liguist namesake these days. "I know it costs a lot of effort," the Florentine said from the Senate on Tuesday. "Salvini has wanted to achieve a turning point that has failed. Let him return to his mojitos," was the invitation of who in December 2016 resigned after a referendum. Renzi made reference to the confusion caused by the election campaign of the Interior Minister in Italy from the best beaches in the country.

In reference to the new parliamentary balances that could occur as of now, Renzi points out that "the League is currently in the minority." The secretary general of the PD, Zingaretti, asks for "unity" in his party: "I think it's a reasonable request and we have to accept," Renzi had to admit.

The current institutional crisis that is being experienced in Italy, in which Renzi could be key, is due to the failure of the strange union between the M5E populists of Luigi Di Maio and the sovereigns of the Matteo Salvini League. After more than a year together in the Executive chaired by Giuseppe Conte, both formations have "discovered" their incompatibility.

So Salvini decided to leave the 'grillinos' and ask for "early elections as soon as possible." The liguist leader, manifestly, avoids the fact that Italy is a parliamentary republic, so the head of state, Sergio Mattarella, is obliged to find other possible Executives before dissolving the cameras. This is where the PD and Matteo Renzi himself come into play.

If there were another feasible government in Italy, it would be the one formed by the M5E and the PD. But Di Maio, Renzi and Zingaretti open and close daily the possibility that both parties can generate a new Executive. Renzi confirms his rejection of the 'grillinos' by saying he is "proud of the 'no' to dialogue with the M5E" a year ago, but he also wants to "cut the number of parliamentarians." Di Maio says that Renzi will not be his interlocutor, but he does not want "the VAT increase".

Zingaretti prefers to "go to the polls", but wants to "stop Salvini." The truth is that if there were elections soon, the M5E and the PD would go directly to the opposition; but if they agreed now, they would have an absolute majority in both houses. On the other hand, Matteo Renzi, with the aim of pressuring the new PD directive to achieve "an institutional government", is threatening to found a new party. The former 'premier', with a certain 'Berlusconian' style, cannot help being at the center of the scene. Looking forward to announcing that he will return.

Renzi took over the PD secretariat in 2013 after successful primaries, promising to "scrap" the Italian gerontocracy. He premiered as the youngest 'premier' in the history of Italy giving a stab to his own party colleague, Enrico Letta, then prime minister.

The Florentine would be president of the transalpine government between 2014 and 2016, in the fourth longest-running Executive of the Italian Republic, which has so far had 65 governments in 73 years. He would leave the Chigi Palace after losing the referendum to reform the Italian Constitution, a query criticized for having turned it into a plebiscite about his person: "Chaos or me," said Renzi. Today, three years after all that, I could play a decisive role in the next Italian Executive. Chaos, in this case, has already begun.
