"Access to and abuse of drugs is a societal problem that harvests lives, divides families and favors organized crime," said Interior Minister Mikael Damberg (S) at a press conference where he and Social Minister Lena Hallengren (S) present new measures to reduce drug use.

Looking over the Postal Act

Today, there are provisions in the Postal Act on duty of confidentiality that prevent postal employees from contacting police or customs on their own initiative if they suspect a crime.

The Government therefore appoints an inquiry that looks at the Postal Act and the conditions for checking letters and parcels.

The current strategy against alcohol, drugs, doping and tobacco, which expires next year, has not succeeded in reducing the use of drugs. Therefore, when the strategy is renewed, there should be a greater focus on drugs.

"Self Critical"

"When it comes to drugs, we are all self-critical," says Lena Hallengren.

The government also assigns the Police Authority to strengthen its efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking. The police authority must report the assignment by 31 October 2021. A partial report must be submitted by 30 June 2020.

"By combating drug crime we can make financing the organized crime more difficult," says Mikael Damberg.

The Government is also commissioning the Crime Prevention Council (BRA) to study the drug market in Sweden, as it has been a long time since a similar survey was conducted.
