US authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that has devastated a nursery in Erie , Pennsylvania , and has killed five children who were trapped inside.

The fire chief of Erie, Guy Santone , explained that the children, between eight months and seven years, slept in the beds located on the second floor when the fire was declared early this Monday.

Firefighters arrived 25 minutes later, found "a lot of fire coming out of the windows of the first floor" and reported that there were "children trapped in the second." "Firefighters have started to put out the fire while another group has climbed up the side of the building and entered the rooms," Santone told the Jet24 chain, a local ABC News affiliate.

"We managed to rescue the five children, but unfortunately they had already died," he said. The woman who ran the nursery at her home, Elaine Harris , has managed to escape the fire and drive to the hospital, but has suffered an accident along the way and has had to be transferred to Pittsburgh for treatment.

Santone has told The New York Times that one of the victims was Harris's son, and that the other four were siblings that his parents had probably left at daycare because they worked the night shift.

Two children, allegedly also children of Harris, have suffered minor injuries when jumping from the upper floor windows. According to Santone, researchers believe that the cause of the fire has been in an electrical problem, but they have not yet completed the investigation.
