Spaniard Marc Marquez (Honda) dominated the trials of the Austrian Motorbike Grand Prix on Saturday and will leave for the race ahead of France's Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha-SRT) and Italy's Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati), beating the absolute record of the number of pole positions.

Marquez, 26, already five times world champion, now has 59 poles on his hunt, ahead of Mick Doohan, an Australian legend of the 1990s.

"I had a really good lap," he said after breaking the track record with a time of 1: 23.027. "I made a small mistake in the last sector but I really had a good pace," he added, claiming he was "surprised" by the 4 / 10th that separated him from his closest opponents, as to discourage them even more.

Currently leading the world championship with a 63-point lead over Dovizioso, the Spaniard has taken an option on a 7th win this season that would allow him to get further away while he will remain eight events after Austria.

Behind, Quartararo has again surprised for his first season in MotoGP, grabbing the 2nd place, the Nice having already won 3 poles since the beginning of the season.

"It's a big surprise to be on the 1st line," he admitted, confident that the Austrian route does not in principle favor the Yamaha and Sunday race will be hard for him.

The relative disappointment came from the Ducati with Dovizioso only 3rd, on a circuit where the Italian machines have triumphed in the last three editions and go in principle favorites.

"I'm happy with that," said the Italian. "Starting in the first row is really important, Marc has a very good pace and you have to be able to stay with him in case," he said while the race should depend on the choice of tires before departure and their management during the race, especially the back.

- Where will Lorenzo go? -

The KTM, who run this weekend at home in Austria, can be satisfied with an 11th place on the grid with the Spaniard Pol Espargaro and a 13th with the Portuguese Miguel Oliveira. The French Johann Zarco could not do better than 16th.

The MotoGP paddock also rustled with rumors about the future of Jorge Lorenzo. Honda's Marquez team-mate is still injured and will normally return to the next British GP at the end of August.

After a disastrous start to the season after moving from Ducati to Honda, the winner of last year's Austrian Grand Prix is now starting at the age of 32 to the Ducati (Pramac) satellite team or Yamaha. -SRT.

In both cases, the triple Spanish world champion (2010, 2012, 2015, all with Yamaha) is a major piece of the "silly season" on the distribution of handlebars in the state of the art stables next year, even if he has in principle still a year of contract with Honda.

The start of the MotoGP race will be held on Sunday at 14:00 (12:00 GMT).

In Moto2, Japan's Tetsuta Nagashima will be leading for the first time in his career. The Spaniard Alex Marquez, Marc's brother and currently leading the championship, missed his qualifications and will start only 11th. Note the surprising third place of the Thai Somkiat Chantra, which is only in the 24th place in the championship.

In Moto3, the Italian Romano Fenati, starting on pole, will referee the duel at the world championship between the Spaniard Aron Canet, who will start 13th, and the Italian Lorenzo Dalla Porta (7th), the first only three points ahead of the second.

Finally, in MotoE (for electric), it's the Frenchman Mike Di Meglio who will start on pole Sunday.
