The parliamentary blocs of Turkey's ruling party and opposition on Friday called on the United States to take steps to hand over the leader of the Gulen organization to the country as soon as possible.

This came in a joint statement issued by the parliamentary blocs of the Justice and Development Party (ruling) and the Republican people and the opposition nationalist movement.

"Fethullah Gulen still manages the terrorist organization from the United States and continues to spread his perverse ideas using the tactics of terrorist organizations such as ISIS and al-Qaeda," the statement said.

He added that the lack of action by the US authorities towards the organization and its leader negatively affects the bonds of trust between the two countries.

Ankara has long sought to hand over Gulen, a self-exiled exile for nearly two decades, a former Erdogan ally, but authorities have accused him of being responsible for the failed coup in 2016 in which soldiers seized tanks and helicopters, attacked parliament and fired on unarmed civilians.

The authorities arrested tens of thousands of Gulen followers, but denies the charges that he is responsible for the coup attempt in which more than 240 people were killed.
