26 July 2019 Little at a time other details of the tragic story that led to the killing of deputy brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega come to light. The intervention of the two carabinieri was prepared. However, it would be a more complex affair than a "return horse": this is what the Capitoline investigators say about the killing of the deputy police sergeant.

The operation that resulted in the violent assault against two soldiers, which claimed the life of deputy brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega, arose following the theft of a purse. According to what has been learned, in the hours before the deadly attack a man had been robbed in the Trastevere area of the purse with his wallet and cell phone inside. The victim turned to the carabinieri to report the theft and when he received the call of the thieves with the ransom request, the classic "return horse", to get back the loot, set the appointment just at the suggestion of the military. This is how the operation started. A patrol of plainclothes soldiers was sent to the appointment set up in the Prati district, deputy-sergeant Mario Cerciello Rega and a colleague from the Carabinieri station in Piazza Farnese. With them, but at a distance, there were other patrols of the carabinieri ready to intervene and also the victim of the theft, kept in a protected situation.

When the deputy sergeant and his colleague noticed that the two thieves had arrived at the meeting, they approached them and qualified asking for the documents. The reaction was violent and sudden: the soldiers were attacked and one of the two criminals rushed to Cerciello Rega with a knife. The colleague, engaged in a struggle with the other thug, tried to defend him when he heard him scream. But to no avail. He had already been stabbed several times. Then the two criminals escaped, while the injured carabiniere managed to sound the alarm. Everything lasted a few seconds.
