Five people have been injured in a series of explosions in an ammunition depot in Russian Krasnoyarsk, reports the Russian state news agency Tass. This is the second time in a week that explosions have occurred in the ammunition depot.

On Monday, one person lost their lives, while 13 were injured, in a powerful explosion in the depot. At that time, around 10,000 residents were also evacuated in the Siberian region.

Residents bunker iodine

About 400 kilometers northwest of Krasnoyarsk, on the Gulf of Dvina, another explosion occurred at a military test facility on Thursday. According to local media, residents of the neighboring towns of Archangel and Severodvinsk have now started bunking iodine. Non-radioactive iodine is used in tablet form to block the body's uptake of radioactive iodine, which spreads during nuclear accidents and nuclear weapons explosions.

In Severodvinsk lies a shipyard building nuclear submarines. Following Thursday's accident, Russian authorities closed the Gulf of Dinah in the White Sea for all shipping for a month, without providing any details.

Authorities alerted to increased radiation

Immediately after the explosion, the Russian Ministry of Defense went out and assured that the radiation levels in the area were unchanged, without explaining why this might be the case. Shortly thereafter, however, regional authorities warned of a short-term increase in radiation levels.

- Everyone has been calling and asking about iodine all day, says a pharmacy employee to the local news site 29.ru.
