“Since June 2019, several large and small political demonstrations have taken place in various areas of Hong Kong,” the statement said on the agency’s website.

According to the State Department, most of the protests "were peaceful, but some escalated into confrontation or led to violent clashes."

The department also claims that these "demonstrations, which can take place with a short notice or without notice, are likely to continue."

Earlier it was reported that Hong Kong law enforcement agencies used tear gas to disperse more than 100 protesters who gathered at the police station.
