Shortly before Trump left Washington, he told the media that he wanted tougher background checks on gun purchases in the country, which would, among other things, prevent people with mental illness from buying guns. But he does not believe in a ban on automatic weapons, Reuters reports.

- I can tell you that there is no political appetite for that right now. But I will certainly raise the issue. There's a big, really big, appetite for background checks, Trump said.
