The Pakistani authorities have gone on the offensive. On Wednesday, August 7, the country cut diplomatic relations with India and suspended bilateral trade two days after New Delhi revoked the constitutional autonomy of the part of Kashmir it controls and Pakistan claims.

"We will recall our ambassador to Delhi and send back theirs," Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told Pakistani television news agency ARY News.

The government also added in a statement that it was suspending bilateral trade with India.

These decisions were announced after another meeting of the National Security Committee, attended by key Pakistani ministers and generals.

For several days, Indian Kashmir has been under high tension. The Indian authorities have imposed a total blackout on the region to avoid a conflagration.

Sporadic gatherings, however, occur. A protester died after being chased by police while more than 100 people, including local politicians, were arrested, the Press Trust of India news agency quoted officials as saying.

Appeal to international authorities

The Indian authorities assure that the situation is calm. But according to a security official, almost all political leaders of Kashmiri parties, both separatist and pro-India, are in detention.

Pakistan plans to bring the issue of Kashmir to international fora, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced on Tuesday, saying he is ready to go to the UN Security Council and the International Criminal Court .
