Exhibitions are currently underway at the factory in Bästekille in Kivik and at Dag Hammarskjöld's farm Backåkra outside Ystad. Both are clinging to the passionate photo interest the blue-eyed top diplomat nurtured alongside his wanderlust among the world's troublemakers.

- He was very humble himself and called it a hobby. Nevertheless, many images are characterized by a strong artistic drive, says Sofie Bergkvist, producer behind the exhibition "The camera taught me to see" at Backåkra.

Reporting in National Geographic

In time, the UN chief received photo assignments for several renowned newspapers. At the time of his death in 1961 he had just published a longer report in National Geographic, with his own pictures from a flight over the Himalayas and Mount Everest.

- I am convinced that Dag Hammarskjöld intended to continue to develop as a photographer once the UN mission was complete. Unfortunately, that never happened, says Sofie Bergkvist.
