The facility under construction in Mutsu City, Aomori Prefecture, is the first intermediate storage facility in Japan that temporarily stores spent nuclear fuel from the nuclear power plant. It is necessary to pass the regulatory standards that have been made, and this examination is prolonged.

On this day, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission exchanged opinions for the first time with the management of the company that operates the facility.
The company explained that it took a long time to discuss the fact that the examination was taking a long time, such as changing the examination policy around the impact of the tsunami.

The interim storage facility is planned by the government and the electric power company as a measure to solve the problem of spent nuclear fuel that continues to accumulate in various places. At present, it will start in FY2021.
