The Lima Group convened this Tuesday, August 6 in the Peruvian capital to an International Conference for Democracy in Venezuela. 59 countries will be represented on the 100 guests, in what is seen in Washington as the last opportunity for Nicolas Maduro to propose a strategy to end the crisis.

The conference has not started yet as Donald Trump has already put pressure on the delegates. On Monday, Washington has frozen all assets of the Venezuelan government with which Americans no longer have the right to do business.

This is not yet a formal trade embargo, but it is the toughest step since January and Washington's recognition of opponent Juan Guaido as Venezuelan president. The message is clear: time is running out to find a peaceful solution to the Venezuelan crisis.

The main supporters of Caracas have not made the move

It is primarily addressed to countries that in Lima still support Nicolas Maduro as Mexico or South Africa or eight who have not yet chosen between Maduro and Guaido as the United Arab Emirates, Serbia or Thailand . The main supporters of Caracas like Cuba, China, Russia, Bolivia and Turkey did not make the trip.

On the other hand, will be present almost all the countries having recognized Juan Guaido , including France. The conference will therefore be an opportunity for them to see if they can agree on a campaign of pressure to weaken Nicolas Maduro and strengthen Juan Guaido whose strategy has lost its visibility in recent months.
