A man of 88 years and Spanish nationality has died drowned on Tuesday at the beach of Torre Valentina de Calonge, on the Costa Brava (Girona), after being rescued by a lifeguard who has tried to revive him without success, Civil Protection reported of the Generalitat in a statement.

The incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m., when the emergency telephone number 112 has been given an alert, after which two ambulances and a helicopter of the Emergency Medical Service (SEM) have been activated.

According to witnesses present at the time of the events, the man was in the water when he had to be demure and unconscious and has not survived despite the fact that the medical staff has performed the resuscitation maneuvers.

At the time of the emergency, which also involved a territorial unit and another of the judicial police of the Civil Guard and the Local Police, waved a green flag and were active surveillance and rescue services present on the beach.

According to the Generalitat, with today there are 16 people who have died on the Catalan beaches since the summer season began, so Civil Protection calls for extreme caution and urgently warn the first responders in case of seeing someone who is ill or has difficulty getting out of the water
