August 04, 2019 Two protests today in Hong Kong a few hours after about 20 arrests carried out following night clashes between demonstrators and police. Riot police fired tear gas at protesters on Hong Kong's main island in the second night of unrest in the metropolis. An AFP journalist saw police shoot tear gas at small groups of demonstrators in Sheung Wan district. The clashes did not last long, because the protesters quickly withdrew and joined a larger group.

The clashes went on late in Hong Kong and the police arrested more than twenty people, accused of "unauthorized gathering" and causing violence. The arrests took place in the neighborhoods of Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok and Wong Tai Sin, where protesters gathered in the night, after a day of protests against the Hong Kong government and to demand democratic reforms. The chaos and violence went on until dawn, 4.00 am local time, when hundreds of people blocked the release of several police vans from Wong Tai Sin police station and attacked the officers with fire extinguishers, helmets, umbrellas and other objects. The police used tear gas and some residents, having seen the reaction of the agents, joined the protesters, writes the South China Morning Post.

The megalopolis in southern China, a former British colony, has been experiencing its worst political crisis since it was returned to China in 1997: this is the ninth consecutive weekend of mass demonstrations, often followed by clashes between small radical groups and the security forces.
