According to Ifremer, the French research institute for the exploitation of the sea, the Mediterranean is the most polluted sea in Europe. The secretary of state for ecological transition, Brune Poirson, presented this Monday, August 5 at the beach of Sablettes in Seyne-sur-Mer, in the Var, a charter with the national association of elected officials of the coast. The goal is to encourage mayors to fight against plastic waste present on their beaches.

"A beach without plastic waste. This is the name of this new charter that includes 15 commitments to be made by coastal municipalities.

Elected representatives are invited to undertake awareness-raising activities, such as the introduction of information on waste found on beaches. They may also encourage nearby traders to stop distributing plastic items such as straws or goblets.

Among the preventive actions, the installation of water fountains so that holidaymakers do not use plastic bottles.

And finally, on the pickup component, the charter proposes, among other things, to promote citizen beach cleaning events.

This pact wants to value the mayors who act for the cleanliness of the beaches: the more they will make commitments, the more they will obtain a high landing of the label "Beach without plastics".
