The United States has been witness to frequent shootings, resulting in hundreds of deaths such as Saturday in a Walmart store in Texas (20 people dead) and one in Dayton, Ohio (9 dead).

Thousands of Americans have staged massive demonstrations in the past two years to demand that the US take action to end the chaos of arms and restrict the sale of automatic weapons. But so far no action has been taken because of the power of the "lobby" of weapons.

The following are the most important shootings within the United States in recent years:

Las Vegas
On October 1, 2017, Steven Paddock, 64, fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on a crowd at the bottom of the building who was attending a canteen concert in Las Vegas, Nevada (West), killing 58 people and about 500 wounded.

Virginia Beach
On May 31, 2019, a public service employee attacked a government compound in Virginia Beach, East Virginia, and shot dead 12 people. The 40-year-old striker, who worked in the government compound for 15 years, was killed during an exchange of fire with the police.

Aurora
On July 20, 2012, an armed young man stormed a movie theater in the city of Aurora, Colorado, and opened fire at the audience during the screening of Batman in the midnight session, killing 12 people and wounding 70. James Holmes was sentenced to life imprisonment in August 2015 without being released.

Pittsburgh Synagogue
On October 27, 2018, 11 people were shot dead by a man who was described as "anti-Semitic," which alarmed the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue.

Robert Bowers, 46, was charged with 29 counts of capital punishment.

Santa School
A 17-year-old student was killed on 18 May 2018 by two adults and eight minors at his high school in Santa, Texas. Demetrius Pagortzis was charged with murder, which carries the death penalty in this state. He used a gun and a pistol, two pieces of arms legally owned by his father, authorities said.

At least five people were killed on June 28, 2018 in the editorial room of The Capital and its online edition of The Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland.
