Saudi authorities released Thursday a Saudi doctor, Walid Fetaihi, five months after US lawmakers demanded his release, rights officials said.

The account of "prisoners of conscience" on Twitter that "Dr. Walid Fteihi was released after 20 months of arbitrary detention."

In early March, a US State Department delegation visited Fathihi in his detention center, and the ministry said the administration of President Donald Trump would continue to discuss his case with Saudi officials.

A few days later, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Elliot Engel, and the committee's top Republican Michael McCall issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over reports of Faitihi being tortured and demanding his immediate release. The two MPs also denounced the lack of legal procedures in Saudi prisons.

Fitehi, a 55-year-old graduate of Harvard University, was arrested in November 2017. He is a civil rights supporter of civil rights and has previously been featured in a television program called "My Life".
