The Palestinian leadership decided on Monday to put in place mechanisms to abolish all agreements with Israel and called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open an "immediate investigation" into what it described as crimes of Israeli occupation after Israeli authorities demolished dozens of homes in Jerusalem.

Both the European Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned the demolitions and called for their immediate cessation.

"The Palestinian leadership decided to put in place mechanisms to cancel all agreements with Israel," said Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the PLO's Executive Committee, during a press conference held at the organization's headquarters following an emergency meeting.

Erekat condemned the Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem, stressing that the government decided, with instructions from President Mahmoud Abbas, to put all necessary to reparation for the families affected by housing and full compensation, as he put it.

On the other hand, the EU has asked Israel to stop "immediately" the "illegal" demolitions of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem.

"In line with the EU's long-term position, we expect the Israeli authorities to immediately stop the ongoing demolitions," EU foreign policy spokeswoman Federica Mugherini said in a statement. "Israeli settlement policy is illegal from the point of view of international law."

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation said in a statement that the demolition of dozens of Palestinian homes in Jerusalem "a serious escalation comes as part of the continuation of the Israeli occupation attempts to change the character of the city of Jerusalem and the legal structure of demographic and forced displacement of Palestinian citizens from their land and property," calling for the legal accountability of Israel.

The organization also called on the international community to compel Israel to desist from its "illegal" practices and put an end to all its actions that violate the rights of the Palestinians, the statement said.

It is noteworthy that the bulldozers of the occupation began since the early hours of the first day, the demolition of several buildings at a time in Wadi al-Homs in the district of Sur Bahir south of Jerusalem after the evacuation of the population.

Security pretexts
Al-Jazeera reported that the Israeli authorities issued orders to demolish the buildings under the pretext of their presence in a security zone near the Israeli wall that isolates Jerusalem from the occupied West Bank.

Palestinians say most of the buildings are located in areas under civilian control of the Palestinian Authority under the Oslo Accords.

Last month, the residents received a 30-day notice from the Israeli authorities before the demolition orders were implemented.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Israeli decision includes ten buildings with 70 apartments, some under construction, and will affect the lives of 350 people.
