British Airways said in a statement it had suspended flights to Cairo for seven days from Saturday in a "precautionary measure" for a security assessment there.

"We are constantly reviewing our security procedures at all our airports around the world, and we have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precautionary measure for further evaluation," the statement said.

The airline said it would not allow a plane to fly unless it was safe. When asked by a spokeswoman for the company to give more details on why the flights were suspended and security arrangements reviewed by the company, she said, "We do not discuss at all security-related matters."

Three security sources at Cairo airport told Reuters that a British crew was checking security at Cairo airport on Wednesday and Thursday. The sources gave no further details.

The British Foreign Office advises against flying to and from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh except for necessity, but has not issued similar warnings against travel from and to Cairo.
