Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, a former commander of the Kosovar guerrillas (KLA) during the 1998-99 conflict, resigned on Friday (July 19th) after being summoned by international justice as a suspect.

"I received a special court summons as a suspect and was offered the opportunity to go there as a prime minister or as a private citizen, and I chose the second option," he said. said Ramush Haradinaj, 51, to the press.

The International Special Court, whose creation was supported by the European Union, was set up in 2015 to take charge of the alleged crimes committed by the Albanian guerrillas (KLA) in Kosovo, mainly against Serbs, Roma and against Albanian opponents of the KLA during and after the 1998-99 conflict in Kosovo.

"I am not accused, I will be questioned"

"It is now the responsibility of the president to hold consultations to determine the date of the elections, and I propose myself to the people again (in these elections) in order to gain (again) their trust, I am not accused, I am to be questioned, "he said after a meeting of the government.

In an interview with AFP this year, Ramush Haradinaj said that Kosovo would respond to any request from the special court.

In mid-January, the court began interrogations in The Hague of two other former KLA leaders: Rrustem Mustafa, known as Remi, and Sami Lushtaku.

The media in Kosovo report that the first indictments are likely to be issued this year. They also speculated that Haradinaj could be among the potential defendants, as well as President Hashim Thaçi and Speaker Kadri Veseli.
