“The US emphasizes that the UN and only the UN is a forum for political progress in Syria. Negotiations of the Astana group, similar to those to be held in early August, cannot replace Geneva, and the United States will not participate in any form, ”the representative of the TASS agency quotes.

The State Department noted that the Geneva format, in their opinion, is “the only credible” negotiation process for a settlement in Syria.

Earlier it became known that negotiations on resolving the situation in Syria will be held in Nur-Sultan on August 1-2.

The meeting will be attended by delegations of the countries-guarantors - Iran, Russia and Turkey, as well as the governments of Syria and the Syrian armed opposition.

In addition, for the first time, observers from the United Nations, Jordan, as well as Lebanon and Iraq will attend the meeting as observers.
