Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had detained a British tanker as it crossed the Strait of Hormuz for violating international navigation laws.

According to a statement issued by the Revolutionary Guards on Friday evening, the British carrier "Stina Imbro" was pulled to the Iranian coast and detained, at the request of the Iranian Maritime Authority.

It was reported that the tanker was en route from the UAE port of Fujairah to the port of Jubail in Saudi Arabia.

The news of the British carrier's detention comes amid heightened tension in the Gulf region, and two weeks after British naval forces detained the Iranian oil tanker Grace 1 off Gibraltar.
