Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj surprised everyone by resigning from office on Friday (July 19th). Suspected of murdering Serbian and Roma civilians during the war of independence, he was summoned to the Special Court for Kosovo in The Hague.

With our regional correspondent, Laurent Rouy

Ramush Haradinaj is not at his first confrontation with international justice: head of government in 2005, he had already resigned to go to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, where he was accused of killing Serb civilians and Roma during the war of independence . Acquitted after three years of detention, he had again escaped the prison on appeal, in 2012. Finally, he was arrested in France in 2017 at the request of the Serbian authorities, but quickly released.

An emblematic warlord, Ramush Haradinaj is seen as a hero by Kosovo Albanians, while Serbs see him as a criminal with de facto impunity because of his political responsibilities.

A skilled negotiator, Haradinaj has often held prominent political roles. He leaves the government by insisting on the organization of anticipated elections ... for which he already announces his candidacy. If the opposition comes to an agreement, these hypothetical elections may not take place. But otherwise, it is a safe bet that Haradinaj will be supported in the polls, despite its new setbacks.
