Former Algerian Industry and Mines Minister Yousuf Yousfi was jailed on Sunday for "wasting public money," Algerian state television reported.

Yusufi took office between 2017 and 2019 and was put under judicial supervision a week ago.

Yousfi is accused of "giving undue benefits to others, entering into deals and contracts contrary to legislation" and "wasting public funds", as well as "abuse of power, function and conflict of interest."

During his tenure, Yousfi gave contracts to set up car parts factories for many foreign brands. The owners of the factories, businessmen close to the former presidency and government, were locked in corruption investigations.

The file of the former Algerian minister and the files of 10 current and former senior officials was transferred to the Supreme Court in the investigation against the influential businessman Mohieddine Tahkout.

Tahkout, who owns a car assembly plant and was close to former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, was jailed with his son and two brothers more than a month ago for corruption cases.

In the same context, on Sunday, former Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia appeared before the High Court of Justice judge in the case of Tahkut, according to the same source.

Since the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Algerian judiciary has been conducting investigations with former officials, leading to the placement of former prime ministers Ahmed Ouyahia, Abdelmalek Sallal, former ministers and businessmen.
