Qatar has opened a naval base for the General Directorate of Coast and Border Security in Samisma, in the north of the country.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser al-Thani and representatives of foreign countries including the commander of the US Fifth Fleet, James Malloy, took part in the opening.

The opening ceremony saw the launch of a number of high-tech boats, and saw a search and rescue team.

According to the Qatari Interior Ministry, the base is about 639,800 square meters and has a six-meter-deep port.

The Seawasmine Marine Base, located in the Samismah area, about 30 km north of Doha, includes all maritime security requirements, including the securing of Qatar's maritime borders and the tightening of security controls and protection on all coasts of the country.

The commander of the US Fifth Fleet praised the opening of Al Dhayain Marine Base and said it was helping to strengthen security coordination between Qatar and the United States.
