Thousands of spectators came to attend this Sunday on the Champs-Elysees in the traditional procession of 14-July. But after the military parade, tensions between protesters and police broke out.

Tensions erupted this Sunday at the beginning of the afternoon on the Champs-Elysees avenue, where the traditional parade of 14-July had just ended. Protesters claiming "yellow vests" were trying to erect obstacles at the top of the artery while the police were trying to disperse them with tear gas grenades.

Mobilized since November 2018, the "yellow vests" had again called to demonstrate on this day of national holiday. Without their fluorescent chaps, but armed with canary balloons and scarves, a few dozen of them booed President Emmanuel Macron when he reviewed the troops at the opening of the parade. Eric Drouet, Maxime Nicolle and Jérôme Rodrigues, figures of the movement, were quickly arrested. At 2 pm, 152 people had been arrested by the police.

The continuation of the parade went off without a hitch so that the " national holiday is the feast of an entire people, " as one of the protesters told the microphone of our special envoy, Stéphane Geneste . Thousands of people gathered on both sides of the Champs-Elysées have attended the parade placed this year under the sign of Europe. Some were there since 6am in order to have the best possible place. Tricolor flags had been distributed. At the applaudimeter, the most successful were the dog handlers, firemen and soldiers of the Foreign Legion.

Three highlights

This parade was marked by three highlights. First, by the parade of the European emblems of the ten countries working together within the European Initiative Initiative (IEI), intended to bring out a common strategic culture in Europe, and to facilitate the establishment of operations. For the occasion, a dozen European leaders were invited to attend the parade from the presidential platform, before a lunch at the Elysee.

The show then came from the sky with a crazy flying, the French world champion jet ski Franky Zapata, perched a few meters above the Place de la Concorde on a surfboard with reactors that may equip the soldier of tomorrow. Europe was also honored in the parade , with several European aircraft, including two British Chinook helicopters engaged in Mali in Operation Barkhane.

The end of the ceremony was marked by a last moment of emotion when a tribute was paid to the wounded of the French army. Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel went to greet these veterans and young soldiers at the foot of the presidential platform.

Finally, a huge French flag was given to a delegation of boys and girls from the civic service and universal national service, a project wanted by the French president and whose first session based on volunteering has just ended.
