The Belgian Thomas De Gendt won the 8th stage of the Tour de France, after which the Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe took over the yellow jersey Saturday in Saint-Etienne.

After a long break, De Gendt (Lotto) was six seconds ahead of France's Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck), who emerged from the peloton on the climb up the last hill. Alaphilippe, a yellow jersey for three days at the start of the week, recovers his good and leads the former Italian leader Giulio Ciccone by 23 seconds.
