Twitter was down Thursday around the world, the site displaying an error message since about 19:00 GMT.
The extent of the outage was not known but a quick survey of AFP regional offices in North America, South America and Europe showed that access to the network was impossible.
"We are currently investigating the problems people are having to connect to Twitter and we will keep you informed of what is going on here," a Twitter spokeswoman said.
"A technical problem has occurred," says the message in French when trying to access the social network. "Thank you for noticing it, we will fix it for a quick return to normal."
Ironically, this failure of Twitter comes at a time when Donald Trump - himself a greedy user of the site - holds the White House a "summit" to denounce the "dishonesty" of social networks, guilty to his eyes of collusion with his Democratic opponents.
