Israel has lived in the past few days on the clashes and violence erupted between angry demonstrators from the Ethiopian-Falasha Jews and policemen, after the killing of an Ethiopian boy by an Israeli officer in the Gulf of Haifa earlier this month.
The protesters saw the incident as an expression of the racial discrimination they face inside Israel, and thousands of them clashed with police in several locations, most notably Haifa and Tel Aviv, where they closed the streets on a large scale and burned cars and police passers-by and set fire to tires.
Israeli police announced that 111 of its members were injured and more than 150 Jews of Ethiopian origin arrested during the protests.
In a new escalation, the Falasha Jews called for a protest rally outside the Israeli police headquarters and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in West Jerusalem. Among the supporters of the demonstration were members of the Israeli army and the police.
Netanyahu called on the protesters to discipline and solve the Flashas under the law, and described the closure of roads and burning cars and attack police actions "unacceptable".
