The science-fiction series "Stranger Things", hailed for having perfectly restored the aesthetics of the 1980s, has beaten an audience record on Netflix with the worldwide launch of its third season, said the streaming giant.

Since July 4, the series, in which young teenagers fight supernatural monsters in a small town in the United States, has been watched by 40.7 million Netflix accounts, according to the group.

This figure, which relates to season 3, is higher than those of "any other film or series for the first four days," the company said Monday night.

"And 18.2 million have already finished the entire season," she said.

Netflix is the global leader in the streaming market, with more than 140 million paid accounts worldwide.

The group sometimes publishes figures on its hearings, but jealously guard the vast majority of its data.

The platform is facing growing competition from rivals with well-stocked pockets, such as Amazon, Disney and Apple.

WarnerMedia is also preparing to launch an online television platform called HBO Max, which will deprive Netflix of the flagship series "Friends".

In comparison, Netflix said in December that more than 45 million accounts had watched the movie "Bird Box", with Sandra Bullock, a week after its launch.

But since it is impossible to verify these figures independently, some analysts have expressed skepticism about these statistics.
