The deep underground drainage and surface groundwater project is one of the most important projects implemented by Dubai Municipality to absorb rainwater for 100 years. It is the first of its kind in the Middle East and the largest in terms of its capacity to store rainfall.

The work of deep tunnels depends on the collection and storage of water and its discharge to the sea, which contributes to the improvement of the disposal of sewage waste in the city through the combination of sewage treatment and the sewage system to reduce carbon emissions. Rainwater harvesting in the streets and residential areas in the event of rainfall, through the provision of high quality infrastructure to meet the needs of the individual and society, and in line with the best international standards.

The system allows control of smells through a special drainage system that ensures non-spread and contain them in a modern manner, in order to preserve the environment and the health of the community.

In an interview with Emirates Today, Director General of Dubai Municipality, Eng. Daoud Al Hajri, confirmed that the construction of the Deep Tunneling Project is underway and will be completed before the Dubai Expo 2020.

Dubai Municipality has indicated that the project represents the latest sustainable system for rainwater drainage and groundwater, and the best systems, especially since it does not need maintenance. The new collection network is designed with great interest to preserve the desert and coastal environment, which makes Dubai an exciting place to work, live and enjoy.
