The US Treasury Department announced Tuesday that Washington has imposed sanctions on three Hezbollah leaders, including two deputies.

The sanctions target MP Amin Shri for "exploiting his official position to advance Hezbollah's objectives, which often contradict the interests of the Lebanese people and government," and MP Mohammad Hassan Raad, who "continues to give priority to Hezbollah activities and to Lebanon's prosperity." The sanctions also targeted the head of the Hezbollah liaison and coordination unit, Wafiq Safa.

The US Treasury Department's inclusion of Hezbollah parliamentarians on the terrorism list for the first time has already sanctioned key elements of the Iranian-backed party.

Last year, the US Department of State imposed new sanctions on Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, his deputy Naim Qassem and people linked to Hezbollah militias.

US sanctions also included leaders of Hezbollah, Hussein al-Khalil, Ibrahim Amin al-Sayyed and Hisham Saif al-Din.
