Iran officially protested on Tuesday against what it presented as the "detention" of its national men's volleyball team when it arrived in Chicago for the Final Six of the League of Nations.

According to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the players were held for several hours by the US authorities when they arrived at the airport.

The ministry complained to the Swiss ambassador to Tehran, Markus Leitner, whose country represents US interests in Iran since the break-up of diplomatic relations between Washington and the Islamic Republic in 1980.

According to the statement, the North America director of the ministry told Mr. Leitner that "if the United States can not accommodate all teams in a neutral and fair way, it is better that they stop organizing sports events. ".

The Final Six takes place in Chicago from July 10 to 14 between the teams from Brazil, USA, France, Iran, Poland and Russia.
