The conservative New Democracy (ND) party, led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has largely topped the legislative elections in Greece ahead of incumbent Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, according to a poll released at the polls' closing.

According to the survey, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, 51, won the elections with 38% to 42% of the vote against his main opponent who would only get 26.5% to 30.5% of the vote, marking the return of traditional parties in Greece after four years in power of Alexis Tsipras, criticized for " betraying " his voters for the pursuit of austerity. If these figures were confirmed, New Democracy would obtain an absolute majority in the Vouli.

Invited to comment on these projections, one of Syriza's representatives acknowledged the defeat of his political party. " There is an unambiguous victory of New Democracy. We'll see what they do with it, "said Panos Skourletis.

The poll was normally scheduled for October but Alexis Tsipras drew the conclusions of the defeat of his formation against the right in the European elections at the end of May by calling early elections.
