A few days ago, the US Wall Street Journal reported that Houthi missile and helicopter attacks revealed weaknesses in air defenses in Saudi Arabia, which rely on the US Patriot system.

The newspaper quoted a Saudi official - who declined to be named - as saying that recent events showed that the country is exposed in terms of missile defense system.

In contrast, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan insists on moving forward with the Russian S-400 missile deal, which set a date for the receipt of its first payment within days.

Here comes the question of the fundamental differences between the US and Russian missile systems:

S400:
- consists of three parts, the first containing eight anti-aircraft units equipped with 12 launch pads, the second includes command and guidance systems and radars, and the third for technical support and maintenance.

- This system is designed to drop aircraft and missiles in the medium and long term.

- Can destroy air targets over 150 kilometers and ballistic missiles over sixty kilometers.

- Operates at a height range of 10 meters minimum and 17 km maximum.

- You need more than 15 seconds to launch the first missile.

- Four different-range missiles are used to cover the range of their operations, including short-range and long-range missiles.

Patriot:
- Consists of four parts, namely the radar vehicle, the control room, and the missile platform, in addition to the missiles themselves.

- The radar in this system can monitor 50 targets at once, and within nine seconds the signal reaches the control room that assesses the danger and decides to fire rockets.

- It protects military installations and air bases from air attacks, and is the basis for its long-term defense.

- Can hit 160 km of air targets and ballistic missiles over 75 km.

- Operates at a height range ranging from 60 meters to 15 kilometers.

- It takes nine seconds to launch the first missile after detecting the threat.

- The Patriot Pack 3 MSE can launch 16 rockets at once, five meters long, and carry a 73-kilogram explosive head.

Finally, Russia is developing a more effective S-500 missile system, the S-500, versus four models of the US system called the Pac-1, the Pac-2 and the Pac-3, and the latest version, the Pac-3 MSE.
