The CNRS's 2019 gold medal has been awarded to physicochemical researcher Thomas Ebbesen, "author of fundamental discoveries and pioneers in the field of nanoscience," the National Center for Scientific Research announced Wednesday.

Aged 65, this professor from the University of Strasbourg led the Institute of Supramolecular Science and Engineering (ISIS) until 2012. He is currently head of the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Strasbourg (USIAS).

His discoveries have allowed "technological breakthroughs in optoelectronics" (combining optics and electronics) for optical communications and biosensors, says the CNRS in a statement.
