A 50-year-old detainer hanged himself in his prison cell in Mulhouse. He had been in custody since May 2017 as part of criminal proceedings.

A 50-year-old prisoner hanged himself Saturday with his sheet in his prison cell in Mulhouse, in the Haut-Rhin, said Monday at the prosecutor's office in that city.

In custody since May 2017

The man was found in his cell he occupied alone at 4:40, according to the same source. He was taken care of by the firefighters, who could not revive him, they added.

Detained on remand since May 2017, he was incarcerated in criminal proceedings: in 2017, he threw himself on police who intervened in the context of an ordinary family dispute, knife in hand and screaming "Allahu Akbar !" ("God is big !"). Despite the usual warnings, he had not stopped and the police had to use their weapon, injuring him with one leg and one arm. The man, who had just been released from prison and seemed to be in a state of great excitement, was not known to be radicalized, and the investigation ultimately did not retain the Islamist nature of the aggression.
