This huge archaeological discovery was made possible by the drought that hit the Mosul dam last year, which led to a significant drop in water levels.
Once the water had receded until the effects appeared on the ancient banks of the Tigris River, Iraqi archaeologists had launched an emergency evacuation to save them.
But the team of scientists did not have much time to carry out archaeological discoveries, as water levels returned rapidly in the winter months of this year, eventually re-flooding the water.

"Metian civilization is one of the least studied civilizations in the Middle East," said German archaeologist Evana Politz. "The number of its research is very small. Even the capital of civilization itself has not been revealed yet."
