In the same vein, a senior State Department official said the United States is building an alliance with its partners to protect shipping lanes in the Gulf.

He said a coalition of nations would provide material and financial contributions to the pre-emptive warning program, which would help the United States and its allies pursue shipping.

Washington, London, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh issued a statement calling on Tehran to adopt diplomacy to reduce tension in the Middle East.
