Former Bahraini parliamentarian Osama al-Tamimi has taken refuge with his family in the vicinity of the US embassy in Manama for protection, said Bahraini rights activists, adding that he later left after receiving a guarantee that he would not be arrested.

Activists on Saturday quoted al-Tamimi as saying that members of the Bahraini Interior Ministry chased him, prompting him to go to the US embassy and try to enter her for protection and to get him out of Bahrain for fear of his life. They were quoted as saying he was under constant threat from the authorities.

Later, the Bahraini rights activist Ebtisam Al-Sayegh reported on Twitter that Tamimi had moved with his family in front of the US embassy building "after receiving a guarantee not to arrest him, with his pledge to attend any building of the Ministry of Interior if summoned."

The Bahraini House of Representatives dropped Tamimi's membership in May 2014, which was described as a precedent in the history of the Council since its establishment in 2002. This came in the wake of a speech in which Tamimi talked about the abuse of prisoners in a prison in Bahrain.

Tamimi has stirred controversy in parliament since his election in 2011, in light of his criticism of the practices of power in Bahrain.
