“Zelensky in this case is in the thrall of the political context that has been actively formed in Ukraine in recent years. The idea that Ukraine should join NATO for a very long time occupied the minds of many Ukrainian politicians. On the other hand, the fact that the president is ready to resort to a referendum on this issue, says that he understands how he got the presidential mandate. Zelensky received it, first of all, thanks to the anti-elite sentiments that have developed in the country, ”said the deputy.

According to Novikov, the fact of the appeal of the President of Ukraine to the opinion of citizens is “beyond any doubt a positive thing.”

“It can be welcomed only on one condition - if a referendum is not preceded by a massive and large-scale brainwashing campaign,” he said.

Earlier, Zelensky said that a referendum on the country's accession to NATO will be held as soon as the Ukrainians are sufficiently prepared for this.

According to him, before the organization of the referendum, it is necessary to explain to the Ukrainians the goals of NATO and to tell about the advantages of joining the alliance for Ukraine.
