In sailor, the dark and penetrating look: the Picasso photo taken by Robert Doisneau is one of the main pieces of an exhibition around the cubist artist and photography that opens Friday in Barcelona.

Baptized "Picasso, the photographer's gaze", this new exhibition of the Picasso Museum of the Catalan metropolis is a walk around the life of the painter in pictures, some taken by him and others of him.

One of them, taken by Robert Doisneau in Vallauris in the south of France in 1952, shows him in his famous marinière behind a window, his hands resting on the tiles.

Picasso, who has been photographed by the most famous like Brassaï, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson or David Douglas Duncan, is "photogenic." Since his youth, he is aware of it and plays with it, "says Violeta Andres, curator of the exhibition.

"He was one of the first to understand the power of the image, the media (...) And instead of shutting himself up and not letting anyone enter his space, he lets himself see but controls always his image, "she adds.

Dozens of photographers went to his home, taking his picture of him or his studio, but few managed to take him "really working, spontaneously," she says.

With the exception of his muse and mistress Dora Maar, who was able to show in a series of photos in 1937 Picasso concentrated in his Paris studio on the realization of his great work, Guernica.

"This is one of the few pictures where he really let his creator intimacy," said Violeta Andres.
