Donald Trump believes that there are no talented politicians in the US Democratic Party who could compete with him in the 2020 presidential election. He stated this on the program Good Morning Britain on the British television channel ITV.

“I do not see anyone (who could get around me in 2020). Let's say so, there’s definitely no one like Winston Churchill among my rivals ... I don’t see anyone who could hope to win, ”said the American leader in response to a journalist’s question about Democratic Party candidates who declared their participation in the elections.

Trump noted that he had “all the trump cards” that would help him win the presidential election in 2020: economic growth, as well as efforts to combat the influx of illegal migrants from South and Central America.

“I am running for re-election with the strongest economy in the entire history of the United States ... I know what to do with Mexico and how to establish order there so that we don’t have to deal with millions of people trying to cross our border. I work on many good projects, ”the head of the White House said.

In addition, Trump credited himself with a victory over the "Islamic State" * in Syria. Recall, in December, the US president ordered to withdraw from the SAR of the American military, saying that they had won a victory over the terrorists.

“When I became president, they were everywhere, and now we have conquered 100% of the territory of the caliphate. Everyone said that in such a short time it would be impossible to do that, ”Trump added.

Trump behaves in his usual manner - “no one praises himself, no one will praise,” American political scientist Mikhail Sinelnikov-Orishak said in an interview with RT.

“According to him, everything that he does is wonderful, he is well done and he never makes mistakes. Such self-confidence infects, and it was reinforced by his victory in the elections of 2016, in which no one believed until the last moment. But what worked in the first election may not work in the second, ”the analyst believes.

Shortly before leaving for the UK, Trump told the Americans through his Twitter when he officially announced his re-participation in the US presidential election.

“I will announce my inclusion in the re-election campaign for a second presidential term on June 18 in Orlando, Florida, together with First Lady Melania, Vice President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence in the Amway Center for 20,000 seats,” - he said.

Economy, "victory" and antirating

Trump’s optimism is commendable, but it’s too early to make bold predictions, says Mikhail Sinelnikov-Orishak. According to him, the effect of surprise and novelty disappeared during the four years of his presidency, and Trump's opponents should have drawn conclusions and developed response strategies.

“Judging by economic indicators, Trump is strong enough. But according to opinion polls, if the elections were held right now, Trump would have lost to Biden with a gap of about 10%. But it’s impossible to say exactly how the elections will be held, now it’s impossible, ”the political analyst explained.

One can agree with Trump’s words about the absence of competitors if certain conditions are met, such as the stability of the US economy, director of the Roosevelt Foundation at the Moscow State University Yuri Rogulev said in an interview with RT.

“If there is no deterioration in the economy until 2020, if the United States develops, and unemployment declines, then it will have chances of winning like the current president who pursues such a policy,” Rogulev explained.

But Trump can be hindered by his extravagant foreign policy decisions - for example, a trade war with China or pressure using tariffs on Mexico, the expert said.

“This shakes the world economy as a whole, and if the balance of world trade is upset, then, of course, the US economy will also suffer from this,” said Yuri Rogulev.

Another key topic on the international agenda on which Trump stopped is his “victory” over ISIS in Syria. According to experts, he has several times unreasonably declared the decisive role of the United States in the destruction of the IG. In one of the conversations with RT, the Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Geopolitical Problems, Vladimir Anokhin, called these statements “impudent and irresponsible” and noted that Trump “has nothing to do with the defeat of terrorists.”

Also, do not forget that Donald Trump has a very high anti-rating, Sinelnikov-Orishak reminded.

“He was like that in the elections of 2016, but then at Hillary Clinton he was just higher. This will be one of the main problems of Trump at the next election, ”the expert noted.

Party list

While Donald Trump is only going to start his presidential campaign, Democrats are already actively voicing their claims to the presidency. Currently, more than 20 politicians have nominated candidates from the US Democratic Party. Among them, former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders, in 2016, the loser of the primaries Hillary Clinton, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, and others.

So far, the greatest chance of becoming the only Democratic candidate for Joe Biden. At the end of April, the sociological service HarrisX commissioned by The Hill conducted a survey, according to which, if Biden could reach the second round of elections in 2020, 43% of voters would vote for him, while Trump would be 37%.

In addition, according to a survey by Emerson College, Biden leads the state of North Carolina, which Trump managed to “beat off” from Democrats and Hillary Clinton in 2016 with a minimal advantage. Now 54% of state residents are ready to cast their votes for Biden, against 44% for Trump. For the US electoral system, victory in one state or another is of particular importance, since the president of the United States is elected by the state electoral college, and not by direct vote.

However, Trump himself is not very concerned about the participation of Biden in the presidential race. He called the former vice president "Sleepy Joe" and expressed doubts about his personal qualities.

“Welcome to the race, Sleepy Joe. I hope only that you have enough sense - and there are doubts about it for a long time - to successfully perform in the primary elections, ”Trump wrote in his Twitter at the end of April.

Recall that Biden thrice nominated his candidacy in the US presidential election - in 1984, 1988 and 2008 - and always lost the party primaries.

Left wing

The second most popular politician among Democrats is the senator from the state of Vermont, Bernie Sanders, known for his sympathies for the ideas of democratic socialism.

Because of this, it is especially popular among the American youth - according to the results of the March Harris Poll survey, 49.6% of respondents answered affirmatively to the question “Would you like to live in a socialist state?”. The survey was conducted among young people born after 1985 and 1995.

For comparison, a similar survey conducted in 2017 showed that the number of those who would like to live in the socialist era was less - 44%.

The senator-socialist Donald Trump spoke as disdainfully as about Biden, calling him "Mad Bernie."

“The finalists of the primaries will be Mad Bernie Sanders and Sleepy Joe Biden, who will go against the strongest economic platform in the history of the country and other wonderful achievements,” wrote Trump in his Twitter on April 17.

After joining the Joe Biden race, Bernie Sanders positions are seriously shaken. In May, a survey by Monmouth University showed that 18% of Democrats are ready to vote for the socialist senator, against 36% for Biden.

Last time, America turned to leftist ideas in the 1930s, during the Great Depression, and now young people are again curious about this, because it is a kind of “forbidden fruit,” Sinelnikov-Orishak noted.

There are only two real Democratic candidates - Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, said Yuri Rogulev. according to him, their level of support exceeds 30%.

“All other candidates from the list of Democrats have a support level of 3-6%. They are not universally recognized, nationwide politicians, for whom a significant part of the electorate is ready to go. That is, out of these 20 odd candidates, only two people have real chances, ”the expert explained.

This testifies to the crisis of the Democratic Party, Rogulev believes, since both Biden and Sanders are “waste material.”

“Both of them have repeatedly tried their hand at the presidential elections, and they have failed. They are well-known politicians, but they cannot be called superstars. Sanders is popular among young people, but he is a marginal politician. He will not be able to lead centrists and middle-class citizens, ”the expert emphasized.

The working class followed Trump, so Sanders is left with only a radical youth electorate.

“As for Biden, the opposite picture is there. He was already a vice-president and is a very moderate politician who could claim to be the leader of the "center" of the Democratic Party. But he will not be able to offer anything new in comparison with the Obama administration, so young people and more radical members of the party will not vote for him at all, like in due time for Hillary Clinton. Democrats have a crisis with candidates, and if nothing extraordinary happens, they have very little chance of opposing Trump in the upcoming elections, ”the expert concluded.
