A human rights activist - Kamel Eddine Fekhar - died Tuesday, May 28 at the hospital. The activist - known for his defense of the Mozabite minority - was arrested and jailed in late March. He had gone on a hunger strike to protest his detention. He died, only hours after being transferred to an emergency ward that night at Blida Hospital.

After more than 50 days of hunger strike, activist Kamel-Eddine Fekhar died in detention. According to a family member, the activist was already in a coma for a few days before he was transferred to Blida hospital.

His lawyer had warned, his health had deteriorated sharply in recent weeks. Master Dabouz had also denounced his conditions of detention in the prison of Ghardaïa hospital, comparing his cell to a dump.

A trained doctor and former elected member of the Socialist Forces Front, Kamal Eddine Fekhar was known for his defense of the Mozabites, a population of Berber origin, from which he was born.

He had already been arrested four years ago, following communal clashes in the Ghardaia region, where he denounced the repression against this minority by the authorities. Last March, he was arrested again and placed in pre-trial detention. He was accused of attacking state institutions.

Today, his lawyer denounces the persecution against his client and friend. He accuses the administrative and judicial authorities of deliberately letting him die and asks for the opening of an investigation.
