In France, 34 lists are in contention for the Europeans. Here in Guyana, who already voted Saturday, May 25, 2019. jody amiet / AFP

Like most EU countries, France votes this weekend for the European elections, to renew the 751 MEPs of the Strasbourg Parliament.

This is the incongruity of this election. France will elect 79 MEPs this year.
But because of the postponement of Brexit and the participation of the United Kingdom in these European elections, five elected officials will have to wait for its effective exit from the EU and the departure of its MEPs to sit.

Another particularity: finished regional constituencies as in the 2014 elections; there is only one national constituency and therefore lists common to the entire territory. Thirty-four in all.

For the rest, nothing changes. Everything is played in one turn. Since this is a proportional representation, the more the lists get a good score, the more they get elected. One condition: collect at least 5% of the votes. Those who do less will not have one elected to Parliament. And those who do not exceed 3% will not be reimbursed for their campaign costs.
