Lee Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is this Tuesday in Sochi, Russia. He was first received by his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. The two men said they wanted to resume the dialogue. The head of the American diplomacy was then received by the Russian president. Vladimir Putin said he wants to " restore full relations with the United States " despite the many issues of disagreement between the two rival powers.
" I have the impression that the President of the United States is in favor of a resumption of contacts between Russia and the United States. On our side, we have said several times that we would like to restore full relations , "said Vladimir Putin at the beginning of his meeting with Mike Pompeo in Sochi, on the shores of the Black Sea.
" It is highly desirable that your visit to Russia be for the benefit of relations between Russia and the United States and contribute to their development, " he added. He hailed the " fairly objective " investigation by special prosecutor Robert Mueller, who concluded that Donald Trump was not colluding with Moscow, calling the accusation " anything ".
Putin, however, did not mention the fact that the report established Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, which Russia has always denied.
" Some areas of cooperation are excellent, North Korea, Afghanistan - we did a good job - and the fight against terrorism, " said Mike Pompeo. " These are things we can rely on ."
The US Secretary of State's visit to Sochi is the highest-level meeting between leaders of the two rival powers since the Helsinki summit in July.
At that summit, President Trump's conciliatory tone towards the Kremlin master had shocked the American political class. The White House hopes, however, that the end of the investigation of Robert Mueller, which concluded less than two months ago to a Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election in the United States, but not to a collusion between the team of the candidate Trump and Russia, allow to turn the page of these icy relations.
