The only public multidisciplinary research organization entirely dedicated to scientific cooperation with the developing countries of the intertropical and Mediterranean zone, the French Institute for Research for Development is celebrating its 75th anniversary with the ambition of reconciling research, development and the common good.

Established in 1944 as the Office of Colonial Scientific Research (ORSC) and then in 1953 Office for Scientific and Technical Research Overseas (ORSTOM) is, since 1998, the Institute for Research for Development (IRD).

IRD today conducts research in equitable scientific partnerships with research institutions in some 50 countries and is part of the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to respond to major issues related to global, environmental, social and cultural changes that affect the entire planet.

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the IRD, RFI met with four of its managers to draw up an inventory of current and future missions of the IRD.

Jean-Paul Moatti , CEO of the IRD, reminds the importance of a fair partnership with the countries of the South.
