US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) had agreed to increase production to lower prices.

"I talked to Saudi Arabia and others about increasing the amount of oil, everyone agrees," Trump wrote on Twitter, but pointed out that the reason for the rise in prices in California is taxes.

Trump said earlier that his efforts to convince OPEC members to achieve a result and that oil prices are falling.

"Gasoline prices are falling," he told reporters at the White House on Friday. "I contacted Opec and told them to cut prices."

Last Monday, Trump stunned the world oil markets by announcing that eight countries would be exempted from sanctions to buy Iranian oil - which was obtained by the end of 2018 - as of May 2, pushing prices up again before falling again.

Brent crude fell $ 2.2 to $ 72.15 a barrel on Friday, while US crude was $ 63.30 a barrel, down about 3 percent.

On Wednesday, Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said he saw no need to increase oil production immediately, but added that his country would meet the needs of customers if they asked for more oil.

"Our intention is to stay within OPEC's voluntary production limits, but we will be responsive to our customers, especially those who have been exempted from sanctions and canceled their exemption," he told reporters.
